Tiger tops Bunny… and everyone else

ANN posted news about the Spring anime character popularity poll held by a user on BIGLOBE. Not all the Spring anime series were included in the survey, but the results are still pretty surprising.

  1. Kotetsu T. Kaburagi / Wild Tiger (Tiger&Bunny) 2,374 votes
  2. Barnaby Brooks Jr. (Tiger&Bunny) 1,912 votes
  3. Sky High (Tiger&Bunny) 1,141 votes
  4. Erio Touwa (Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko) 681 votes
  5. Meme Touwa (Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko) 607 votes
  6. Naruko “Anaru” Anjou (AnoHana) 566 votes
  7. Hakase (Nichijou) 563 votes
  8. Kurisu Makise (Steins;Gate) 528 votes
  9. Karina Lyle / Blue Rose (Tiger&Bunny) 503 votes
  10. Aria H. Kanzaki (Hidan no Aria) 481 votes

And bubbling under was Dragon Kid on place 12. If you compare the amount of votes Kotetsu and Barnaby got to the rest of the characters in top 10, the only appropriate word I can come up with is “steamrolling”.

Kotetsu isn’t your usual anime leading man so I think that blogging about why he’s so popular is inevitable now. ( `ー´)八(`ー´ )

It’s over 900!

GO NEXT!

There’s a Tiger&Bunny only doujin event in Tokyo on July 18th. So far the T&B doujins we’ve seen haven’t been anything special, but because I have great hopes for this event I’ve been keeping an eye on the site for a few weeks now.

About a week ago they announced that because there was so much interest from the artists wanting to take part, the event was moving to a bigger venue with space for over 900 circles. At the time I thought that it felt like total overkill. I mean, when the sign ups for the event closed there were only 9 episodes out. How many books could there be? And today, the circle list went up.

At the same time our jaws hit the floor.

There are 974 circles taking part. That’s a completely mindblowing number for a series that hasn’t even reached its halfway mark. If we do a little math here… I pulled 10 random doujins from my bookshelf and measured them (for science, of course). On average a doujin is about 3,5mm thick, give or take a bit. If each circle releases at least one book (and some already have more than one out!) and they’re piled up, that pile would be 3,4m high. (That’s 11’15” for you non-metric people.)

I have no idea where to start compiling our shopping list for the event.

Aki_the_geek: …. you’d have to spend the whole day browsing the circles’ sites
Aki_the_geek: if you spend one minute per site that’s like 16 hours
Aki_the_geek: mother of-
derpchan: insanity
Aki_the_geek: WHAT IS THIS
Aki_the_geek: I DON’T EVEN

In general the amount of new fan art that flows into Pixiv each day is indescribable. Right now the count on the tag says 28,190 illustrations. A Pixiv index page shows 20 artworks, so that’s over 1,400 pages of just Tiger&Bunny art. And there’s another 4600+ non-illustrated stories listed under the tag, too. I don’t remember any other fandom I’ve been part of that had such an explosive start.

We think it’s actually… kinda awesome. Can’t get enough of this stuff. (Also, this is more math than I’ve done in months.)

Uh, we’d love to get recs for artists we should check out before the event… If there’s someone out there who isn’t as overwhelmed by the list as we are.

Derp happens

(No I’m not talking about myself…)

I’ve read so many QQ’s about the quality (or lack thereof) in episode 11 that I figured I should probably say something about it.

Guys, take a chill pill. It’s one episode. Sure, the derp moments were pretty derpy. And there were enough of them for even me to feel a bit annoyed. But remember that TV anime is made under a tight schedule and budget. Most series are only a few episodes ahead in production than what’s being broadcasted. (If the rumors about the last episode of Togainu no Chi anime are true, it was ready less than 24 hours before it was set to air. And the whole thing was herpderp to begin with!) Also, the inbetweeners aren’t as good at drawing as the key animators, and that’s where most of the derp was.

Many TV anime have their art fixed for DVD and BD releases, it’s kinda becoming a standard. Tiger&Bunny is getting prettied up, and when I heard about that I expected to see more derp in the broadcasts, since it can be fixed anyway.

Comparison of TV and BD versions.

Okay, I admit that I’d prefer to watch my anime with less derp, but this is just something we have to deal with.

Episode 11 speculah

Superhero Saturday brings more plot and things are getting much more interesting than we expected. (Honestly, we just expected things to get gayer. And they did. But I didn’t mean to blog about that… this time.)

Anyways…

So, in episode 6 we were introduced to a new villain, Lunatic, and for a few episodes he seemed like the main villain of the series because he also appears in the OP. Now Jake Martinez and his group of NEXT have turned Lunatic into a wild card. But more about Lunatic (and Yuri and his fabulous hairclips) another time. We spent three furious hours discussing theories and speculations after seeing episode 11, and we think that there’s a single person behind it all.

Under here is lots of speculah, spoilers up to episode 11, and probably more questions than answers.
